Common Types of Pool Lighting

Adding lighting to your pool provides enhanced safety while also giving you a chance to create interesting visual effects. You’ll find that there are several options available for pool lights, so take your time going through these and determining which would work best for your pool. The following types of lighting are just a few that are available for you to choose from.

LED Lighting Above and Below Pool Surfaces

LED lighting is among the newest options for pool lights. This type of lighting offers a number of advantages, including the following:

  • Energy-efficiency: LED lights consume less energy, resulting in lower energy bills.
  • Several placement options: You can install LED lights above the surface of your pool, below it or both, Lights above the surface offer light for your pool and the surrounding pool area, while underwater lights can enhance your pool’s aesthetic appeal and provide light for nighttime swimming.
  • Multiple colors: When you choose LED lights, you get to choose from more than basic white. LED lights are available in several colors, so you can select a certain color scheme or have multi-colored lights.
  • Longer lifespan: LED bulbs last roughly 50,000 hours, which is much longer than other types of pool bulbs.

Fiber Optic Lighting and Effects

Fiber optic lights are ideal if you want to create different lighting effects in your pool, such as colors that change on a regular basis. This type of lighting for pools has potential benefits, along with drawbacks, such as:

  • High degree of versatility: Fiber optic lights come in a wide range of colors and can be used for several kinds of effects to create a certain mood for your pool.
  • Easy to change: Although fiber optic bulbs don’t last as long as LED bulbs, they can be changed more easily.
  • Electrical issue: For safety issues, fiber optic lights that are installed underwater should never be used during storms.

Halogen Lights

Halogen lights are another option to consider for your pool, especially if you want to light up large areas. These lights provide the following benefits, although they do have a couple of drawbacks:

  • Different placement options: Halogen lights can be installed above or below your pool’s surface, just as LED lights can.
  • Easy to change: Halogen lights are simple to change when they burn out but keep in mind that they don’t last as long as LED lights.
  • Limited colors: Halogen lights aren't available in a wide range of colors. In fact, you might only have a couple of colors to choose from.
